As much as I hate to say this, install Nightfall first. Getting the heroes will make your time in GW much easier. If you install Chapter1 first you'll end up playing by yourself most the time.

You'll be soloing the quests but you can use the henchmen. For missions, I've always been able to find other ppl to group with. If you're lucky, you can even find ppl for quests.

Platinum contains both Prophecies as Eye of the North.
2 The world is big, however you get your own copy of the map.
3 Yes there is. Short-timed PvP and long-timed PvP.
4 I had 512 MB RAM until a few months ago. Prophecies worked well but EotN didn't because it needed 1 GB. The loading was slow and there was approx. 30 seconds black screen after a cinematic, made me do the first EotN quest fail.
6 Max. level is 20, it sounds low, but it actually is just enough, the foes still increase in level (up to 30) so there still is some challange.
7 There is a storyline. Actually it is the point to follow it and you will also get involved with it. However, on prophecies you can skip this storyline most of the time, only in the beginning and on certain other places you have to participate in it. In EotN there also is but after you accepted several quests, you will be able to move freely. In factions and Nightfall however, you are somehow forced to follow it.

EotN is an expansion, this means you have to owe a campaign first. Meaning: you have to install prophecies first and later on EotN (Which you can access with your Prophecies characters only after you reach a specific destination if you only buy platinum).
The heroes don't matter. Henchmen are also very handy. I bought prophecies some years ago and completed it with henchmen and sometimes other players only. Heroes make it more easy then henchmen, but look on the bright side, you'll get heroes with EotN as well, and very soon indeed. So when it gets heavy you still have the heroes to aid you out.

I would disagree. True, heroes are very powerful but to be powerful they need to be outfitted with skills. A brand new player won't have a wide enough selection of skills unlocked for their heroes, and for the most part the skills on offer at the hero skill trainers are less than impressive, so at the beginning a hero doesn't offer any real tactical advantage over a henchman's static skill set. The only advantage that heroes would have at that point is the ability to flag them independently, which you don't really need to do for PvE.

Starting with Prophecies is a good idea, because Prophecies offers a huge range of extremely useful skills as free rewards for doing quests. It allows new players to build up the selection of skills that they have unlocked without much effort, so that when Nightfall is added the heroes can be outfitted with much more effective builds much more easily.

In the beginning there was only prophecies, and almost everyone made it to the end of the game without any heroes. I completely agree with Toutatis for the part that these heroes need to be equipped, which is very hard in the beginning without any good skills. After various quests these skills will come and then it is no longer a problem.

Eye of the North is an expansion to the campaigns, so you don't start characters there, but can get one up to that point once it is created.

I just started an Elementalist and went with Monk as 2nd for the healing and rez in my group. I'm hoping I do well.

Roleplaying characters can PvP (PvP characters, though, have no access to PvE). I think you find an Arena after you are out of the starting area, but I'm not to that point yet, either.

Yes.

In this game you have a main profession, and a secondary.

The idea of the secondary profession is to the boost the effectiveness of your primary.

Mesmer and Monk are generally the most popular secondary professions because Monk offers viable self heals, and Mesmer offers decent energy management.

It's a Primary quest you're given, which allows you to choose one of the profession available in your campaign (which isn't your original profession). You can later change by either getting a quest (Prophecies) or going to a profession changer (NF and Factions).

Generally it's best to focus on one element and put the rest in Energy Storage and/or a supporting attribute. For example you could be an Air elementalist with some Earth to provide wards. Or a Water elementalist with some Fire so you can use [[Glyph of Immolation] with [[Steam]. Other people just max out Fire and Energy Storage.

The only mesmer skills you should think about using are in Inspiration or No Attribute (like [[Arcane Echo]). You probably shouldn't bother with Mesmer skills at such a low level anyway.

You can reorganise your attribute points whenever you're in a town so don't be afraid to invest them.
